Should I Give a Remote Technician My Password?

Why customers should keep passwords, banking credentials and authentication codes private during remote technical support, and how a technician can work without storing them.

Plain-EnglishUseful guidance without unnecessary jargon.
Customer-firstUnderstand the option before you buy support.
IndependentNo manufacturer impersonation or fake authority.
As a general rule, keep your passwords private. A technician can often guide you to a login screen and let you type the password yourself without seeing or recording it.

Information BACKON technicians should not ask you to disclose

  • Online-banking password.
  • Card PIN or CVV.
  • One-time bank/card authentication code.
  • Crypto-wallet seed phrase or private key.
  • Password-manager master password.

What if a Windows or software password is needed?

The preferred method is for the customer to type it. If an application or operating system requires a credential to continue, the technician can pause and ask the customer to take control of the keyboard.

Why this matters

Remote support works best when the customer and technician both understand the boundary between “information needed to troubleshoot” and “credentials that should remain secret.”
