Wi-Fi Says Connected but There Is No Internet?

“Connected” means your device has joined a local network. It does not guarantee that the router has a working path to the internet. That distinction is the key to troubleshooting.

Quick answer: Test another device on the same Wi-Fi. If every device has no internet, focus on the router/modem or ISP. If only one device is affected, focus on that device.

Local Wi-Fi and internet access are different

Your laptop can talk to the router successfully while the router cannot reach the internet. That is why the Wi-Fi icon can look normal even though websites fail.

If every device has no internet

  • Check the modem/router status lights.
  • See whether the ISP reports an outage.
  • Restart the modem/router according to the provider guidance.
  • Check whether wired devices are also offline.
  • Avoid factory-resetting ISP equipment unless you know how it is provisioned.

If only one computer has no internet

  • Restart the computer.
  • Disconnect and reconnect to the correct Wi-Fi.
  • Temporarily test without a VPN if you can do so safely.
  • Check whether a browser, proxy or DNS setting changed.
  • Use Windows built-in network diagnostics.

What remote support can review

Device-side DNS, IP configuration, network adapter state, proxy/VPN settings and Windows network components can often be reviewed remotely—provided there is some alternative connectivity or the issue is intermittent. A total loss of internet may require phone guidance until connectivity returns.

When the ISP is the right next step

If multiple devices are offline and the router cannot establish service, the provider may need to test the line, modem provisioning or an area outage. A responsible third-party support provider should recognize that boundary.

Frequently asked questions

How can Wi-Fi be connected with no internet?

Your device can be connected to the local router even when the router cannot reach the wider internet.

Can this be fixed remotely if I have no internet?

A normal remote-control session requires connectivity, so we may need to guide you by phone or wait until some connection is available.

Should I factory reset my router?

Not as a first step. ISP-managed routers can require provider settings, so a reset may create more work.

Support boundary: BACKON provides independent third-party remote technical support.
